The idea and work of Walking With Angels, Inc. began in 2002, while our founder walked through the open sewers of an East Africa slum, visiting the patients of five volunteer Community Health Workers (CHW).
The CHW volunteers knew the slums well because they lived there, this was their way to care for people in their local community. The opportunity to care their HIV/AIDS afflicted neighbors came with a 20 to 30 hour per week minimum responsibility, trudging through mud and muck, created from the overflow of water and waste winding through the lean to shacks that pass for housing in the slums. A tour like this is unusual, however this tour occurred because these CHW were asking their local priest to network his friends for bandages and a bit of food for their patients. Times were tough at the moment and the clinic they worked with was stretched to capacity trying to serve urgent medical needs, leaving little left over to cover necessities they felt were important. Our founder was astonished by the commitment that drove these CHW to serve others when they were personally in bleak circumstances, without income opportunities for their own families. The CHW myopic focus on the needs of others started a “feeling”, which quickly grew into a suspicion that she might have been walking with “angels” in that Nairobi slum.
Through small donations from friends, family and folks that hear this story over the years, our founder and her husband have supported the continuing efforts of the CHWs as they continue to make a difference in the lives of their patients. What they have achieved through small projects and proposals is amazing. CHWs
The CHWs commitment to their neighbors opened our founders eyes to the extraordinary work being done by leaders in other communities. It didn’t take long to recognize these leaders by their pattern of selfless dedication, inspiring leadership and the navigating ‘compass’ they seemingly employ, focused on their community’s deepest need and highest aspirations.
Currently, we work with several community organizations in East and Central Africa, which directly transforms the lives of over 6,000 people.
